Unleashing the potential of cannabis and cannabinoid treatments do require a transdisciplinary approach that captures the current knowledge base across the fields of biomedical, life sciences, and policy research.
PATIENT FOCUSED CERTIFICATION
Until recently, many producers, manufacturers, dispensaries, and laboratories involved in the cannabis industry have been allowed to operate legally without much regulation or oversight. Due to increasing concerns over the need for standardization of medical cannabis preparations, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) created industry guidelines for producing, manufacturing, analyzing, and dispensing medical cannabis. Additionally, the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP) completed the Cannabis Monograph, which is a guide for the standardization of cannabis. The work of AHPA and AHP laid the foundation for PFC, which was first put in place by the Americans for Safe Access Foundation (ASAF) in 2014. AHPA and AHP guidelines continue to be incorporated into government regulations as mandatory product safety standards in cannabis programs worldwide.
ICCI’s Patient Focused Certification (PFC) is the only nonprofit, third-party certification for the medical cannabis/hemp industry based on quality standards issued by the AHPA and the AHP that certify the quality and reliability of medical cannabis products sold by licensed producers. The PFC certification process includes ongoing annual scheduled and surprise physical audits of all facilities, including audits of process documentation, staff training, product testing, and the consumer complaint process. PFC-certified products and businesses exhibit the PFC seal on their marketing and promotional materials, as well as on their product packaging to help patients make educated purchasing decisions.
More and more medical cannabis producers have steadily continued applying for PFC certification, and multiple applications from operators around the world are being reviewed. Results from audits of medical cannabis facilities up to now show that without exception, PFC is bringing unmatched safety, quality and consistency to the cannabis industry.
