Unleashing the potential of cannabis and cannabinoid treatments do require a transdisciplinary approach that captures the current knowledge base across the fields of biomedical, life sciences, and policy research.
PATIENT FOCUSED CERTIFICATION
Patient Focused Certification (PFC) is the only nonprofit, third-party certification for the medical cannabis/hemp industry based on quality standards issued by the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) and the American Herbal Pharmacopeia (AHP) that certify the quality and reliability of medical cannabis products sold at licensed businesses. Due to increasing concerns over the need to standardized medicinal cannabis preparations AHPA created industry guidelines on manufacturing, producing, dispensing, and laboratory operation standards. Additionally, AHP completed the Cannabis monograph, a guide for the standardization of cannabis. The work of AHPA and AHP laid the foundation for a certification body called PFC a project of the Americans for Safe Access Foundation. AHPA and AHP guidelines are being incorporated into government regulations as mandatory product safety standards in new state programs.
The certification process includes a scheduled physical audit, documentation and staff training audit, complaint process and at least one surprise audit annually. PFC-certified products and businesses will exhibit the PFC seal on their marketing, promotions and packaging to help patients make educated purchasing decisions. The producers, manufacturers, dispensaries, and laboratories involved in this industry can operate legally in their states but until recently functioned without much regulation or oversight.
PFC launched in early 2014 with facilities in several states having successfully completed the auditing process. Cannabis operations have steadily continued applying for certification audits and applications are being reviewed from operators from every state and country with cannabis access laws. Results from over a year of auditing of medical cannabis facilities show that without exception, that PFC is bringing pharmacovigilence to the cannabis industry.
